Sicilan Citrus, Marmalades and Biscuits
San Giuliano is an ancient fief which has belonged to the Marchesi Paterno Castello di San Giuliano for 800 years. Situated between Catania and Siracusa, this part of Sicily boasts a remarkably fertile soil which makes it very well suited to the cultivation of citrus fruit. The first orange trees were planted there in the early nineteenth Century and organic citrus fruit cultivation continues there today.
Marchesi di San Giuliano marmalades were born from an old family recipe and the entrepreneurial sprit of Fiamma di San Giuliano.
One of the most distinguished marmalades is Primasole from a particular Sicilian orange, which ripens first in early autumn. Tangeli, made from a cross between a grapefruit and mandarine is also of note. After the San Giuliano fruit is hand-picked at the peak of ripeness, it is turned into marmalade. So production can only take place between November and April when fresh fruit is available. No preservatives, additives or artificial colours are used, only fresh fruit, sugar and lemon juice.
An abundance of zests and whole pieces of fruit give exceptional colours and flavour. Perfect on toast, over ice cream, between layers of cake or simply by the spoonful.
In recent years a range of biscuits, made from only natural ingredients and the fresh fruit and almonds grown on the estate, has been added to the list of products.
